Guru Shmuru
There is no such thing as a guru in this business.
There are simply people who do what you want to do– only better.
There are certainly mentors, and teachers, and high quality leaders… but this guru business is really, really, really getting old.
I suppose it has been very self-serving while it lasted… after all, the best way to make a sale is by:
- Making yourself appear to be an authority-
- Gaining the trust of those you are trying to sell to.
Granted, there are some people who have been marketing online for a long time… veterans.
And there are some veterans who have done quite well, developing some serious understanding and skills… successful veterans.
And, there are some relative newcomers who have emerged in the last four years or less and made a name for themselves… successful students of successful veterans.
BUT- to call them gurus, to give them that power and status over you, is to keep yourself small. I intend to build my businesses to match or even exceed ‘their’ levels, DON’T YOU? Why even start down this road unless you have every intention of doing it right, doing it well, and succeeding?
NOW– these veterans, these successful students of veterans, have a lot they can teach you. Of course. I started this off by saying they do what you want to do– only better. Just please, please– don’t lessen yourself by putting them on a pedestal.
My advice, and what has worked for me, is this:
Find a few of the top leaders in this field… ones whose tactics and values resonate with your own ideas on selling. (If you would like some recommendations, I can give you my short list.) People who understand long-term. People who let their integrity lead them. Stay on their lists. Chances are, they will not be viewing you as a ‘mark’, but as a like-minded entrepreneur with a desire to learn and grow. Rarely will you see a promotion for some information or gimmick that won’t be useful to you. These are the leaders who will help you. These are the people you will learn from and want to mirror.
As I may have mentioned somewhere else, most of the marketers who get you to opt in to their list just want your address in order to sell the next greatest thing to you, regardless of where you are actually at in your business. Who does that benefit? You? Or them…..
Oh yeah…
One last point about guruville. Have you ever stopped to think about those claims of ‘million dollar launches‘ and ‘$848,761 in one month!‘? How much did those heavy hitters spend to make that? 40%? With affiliate commisions, etcetera, 60%? And if a guy is actually making 38,00 dollars each and every month, why is he online trying to sell you his special, secret methods for$47.00??? Buyer Beware….
To your increasing focus!
